Fly Fishing
the Outer Ponds in Pittsburg
If
you like to fish “back in”, grab your canoe or float tube and try Pittsburg’s
outer ponds. Tall Timber has rowboats at the dams of several outer ponds in
Pittsburg for the adventurous fisherman. To reserve a boat, go to the Lodge
front desk and you will be provided with the boat key, oars, an anchor and PFDs.
There is no charge for Tall Timber guests to use the outer pond boats. The
ponds listed below all provide great brook trout fishing and wildlife viewing.
Open season on the outer ponds is the 4th Saturday in April through October 15th. The daily creel limit for trout is five fish or five pounds, whichever is reached first.
Terrell Pond Terrell Dam was built by Perrly Terrell, who was a NH Fish & Game Warden. It is the west branch of Indian Stream and located approximately 12 miles north of the Lodge on Indian Stream Road. It is a beautiful drive along the stream and there is plenty of brook trout in the pond. Fly fishing only, no motors. See map
Round Pond is approximately 5 miles north on Route 3 from the intersection with Beach Road. Head north on Route 3 and turn left on Round Pond Road and follow the signs for the boat ramp. This pond has General Rules and motors are allowed. Round Pond is the deepest of all the outer ponds and produces good early season brook trout fishing. See map
Coon
Brook Bog
is
located approximately 10 miles from the Lodge. Head north on Route 3
approximately 7.8 miles and turn
left on Coon Brook Bog Road, directly across Route 3 from Magalloway Road.
Travel about 2 miles, turn left and you will come to the dam. A favorite of many
fly fishers, Coon Brook Bog is fly fishing only, and motors are not allowed. Try
stripping a Soft Hackle Pheasant Tail, a Partridge & Yellow or an “88”.

Scott
Bog
is
fly fishing only
and motors are not allowed. This bog is located north off of Route 3. After the
Second Connecticut Lake boat launch, take the next right, which is East Inlet
Road, approximately 13.4 miles north from the Beach Road intersection. After the bridge, go left and travel approximately 3 miles. You will come
to a fork in the road, take a left and follow the boat launch sign.

East Inlet, which is the east inlet to Second Connecticut Lake, has General Rules and motors are not allowed. Follow the directions to East Inlet Road above, except take a right after the first logging bridge. East Inlet will come in to view in approximately 2 miles. In addition to the brook trout fishing, this is a great bog to kayak or canoe and the wildlife viewing is outstanding. Sightings of moose, deer, waterfowl, loons and otters are common. Fishing East Inlet Brook can be quite good below the dam and down stream as well. Try skittering a Hornberg or Elk Hair Caddis on the surface to entice a brookie to strike. See map
Boundary Pond, sometimes called Mountain Pond, is fly fishing only and motors are not allowed. It is located 28 miles from the lodge, north on Route 3. Follow the same route as East Inlet but continue past the Inlet for another 10 miles. Take a left, park in the parking area and walk in a short distance to the pond. Located literally on the top of a mountain bordering Canada, Boundary Pond is the most remote of Pittsburg’s ponds and offers some great evening trout fishing.
